2017 Travel Round-Up

This new series brings together all of the holidays I went on throughout my student years. Starting with 2017, which was predominantly my first year of university, I suddenly had much more free time than I ever had at school, and this was the start of my wanderlust and travel obsession.

January - Zermatt, Switzerland

After my exams, I had a few days before term started again and so, decided to go skiing in Switzerland for the first time with my family. The views were stunning and we were near enough to the Italian border to cross over at lunch for my favourite cuisine.

April - Aveiro, Portugal

My cousin was studying in Aveiro for her undergraduate degree, and since I'd never visited the town I decided to use my Easter holiday to visit her. I loved this cute Portuguese town and would definitely recommend hiring some bikes to get to know the town, as well as visiting Costa Nova beach and going on a typical boat tour along the river.

June - Mauritius

During the Summer holiday, I went to Mauritius with my family for a relaxing vacation. The island is beautiful, with amazing resorts and loads of activities, including parasailing and hiking.

July - Zagreb, Croatia

I went to Zagreb with some school friends as none of us had been to Croatia before. The city is nice but we made the mistake of going during the week so we didn't manage to go out as much as we'd have liked. One thing I found very odd was people smoking inside the clubs as I hadn't seen people smoking indoors anywhere except for in casinos in Las Vegas.

August - Madeira, Portugal

My family is from this semi-tropical island and so, I used to go there every holiday. However, this was the first time I acted a proper tourist, visiting all the typical landmarks including Cabo Girão and the lavadas. I also rode on the back of a motorbike and jet skied for the first time!

September - Barbados, Antigua & Barbuda, St Lucia

This holiday came as a complete shock to me. My mum had told me that we were going to Greece, but my brother let it slip that we were actually going to Barbados. Two days before our departure I managed to tear my meniscus on a run, meaning that I was on crutches during the trip. When we got to the airport my mum revealed that we'd also be visiting St Lucia and Antigua & Barbuda and we were very excited. This trip was amazing with great food, lovely people, and the most stunning sunsets. We went on road trips, water skied, shot clay pigeons, scuba dived, and swam in the warm sea. This was our first time in the Caribbean and what my mother had failed to consider was that September is actually hurricane season here. We were extremely lucky and suffered minimal disruption but it did teach us to research the weather before travelling in the future.

October - Madeira, Portugal

One of my cousins got married in the beautiful Madeira, and we fled from rainy England to enjoy the food and sun of the island for a few days.

2017 was a fairly relaxed year for travel, but it ignited my love for travelling as I realised I had more time throughout university than I'd have throughout the majority of my life and I learnt to seize this opportunity and explore other countries throughout my undergrad.
