A Day Trip to Canterbury (2024)

One Saturday in September, my boyfriend and I decided to take a day trip to Canterbury. We had been wanting to visit for some time but didn't think a whole weekend there was necessary, especially as I'd been previously, so we got a train to Canterbury East station and within no time we'd arrived at the city.

We started by walking along the city wall, finding a nice viewpoint of the city, before spotting a food festival nearby. We ambled in and it was just our luck that the day we'd chosen happened to coincide with Canterbury's Cooking Food and Drink Festival! My boyfriend treated us to coffee and cake, and after tucking into that, we decided to explore. We'd gotten very lucky with the weather and we went on a riverside walk, which was gorgeous.

Unfortunately, the famous Cathedral was under construction, but we still managed to see its exterior, and as we walked down the quaint high street, my boyfriend tried some fudge for the first time, before we headed into various charity shops and a board game shop! We also were attracted to a crooked house with a Charles Dickens quote written on it, Catching Lives Charity Bookshop, where some wrapped books with only a written summary on it were being sold. I bought a friend of mine one of these as I thought it was a great idea, and then we set out in search of lunch.

We settled on a burrito place but by this point I was starting to feel slightly queasy so mainly was just grateful for the sit down. That didn't last long however as we had bought another Mystery Guide to do whilst in Canterbury. These are mystery books which take you around a city or town, trying to decipher clues in order to solve the mystery. We love these and this was our third one, having already done one in the West End on Valentine's Day, and another in Bristol over the late summer Bank Holiday. As Canterbury is very small, we ended up retracing our steps considerably but I enjoyed the storyline a lot and it was a lot of fun.

Unfortunately, it was at this point that I started to feel very queasy and so despite it being a beautiful day, we headed to the train station and got a 5pm train bound for London. Canterbury is a picturesque city not far from the capital and provides the perfect break from the hustle and bustle of London, with its quaint little streets and punters along the riverside and is well worth visiting if you haven't already!
