Greece 2019

After finishing three years of university, two mates and I decided to celebrate with a trip to Greece. I had never been to Greece, but was very excited to go as I loved seeing pictures of the islands and the stereotypical 'My Big Fat Greek Wedding' is a classic in my household. We wanted the trip to be a mix between culture and partying, so decided on Corfu.

After a kerfuffle with my passport (my British one was at the Russian visa centre and my brother had accidentally taken my Portuguese one to Italy with him), we landed in Corfu. The island is quite small but not so small that everything is within walking distance, meaning that to go to the sandy beaches or on a night out we had to take a bus. Nonetheless, we were within walking distance of the old town with its picturesque narrow streets with flowers, and the port. The port was very convenient, as it meant that we were able to take a day trip to Sarandë, Albania, with just a 30min - 1hour (depending on the boat) journey. None of us had ever been to Albania but we were all surprised by how much we liked it. We were only there for a few hours so we mainly relaxed by the beach, but the people seemed nice and the view was pretty.

We purposely avoided going to a 'party island' as we were aiming to avoid 'Brits abroad', but we did want to celebrate a bit, so on one night we decided to get the 9pm bus down to Kavos for a night out. This was the last bus down, and the first bus up was at 6pm, so we had a lot of time to kill. Our first mistake was buying vodka and coke to pre; drinks are ridiculously cheap in Kavos and there's nowhere to pre there unless you're staying in the area. We also hadn't realised that A Level exams had finished recently, meaning that the clubs and bars were packed with 18 year old Brits (which wasn't really our vibe). Although the night was very interesting and eventful, my favourite part was at about 4am when we decided to chill on the beach until our bus came. It happened to be full moon, so we could see where we were swimming, and the water was warm and the sunrise was stunning above the water. Having said that, a girl did lose her bag so we were lucky that one mate stayed with our stuff. We arrived back home at 7am and the walk between the bus station and our house remains one of the roughest moments of my life, but it was definitely worth the struggle.

On our last day, we went to a sandy beach on the other side of the island and decided to go on the UFOs for the first time. I absolutely loved this as I'm a big fan of watersports and hadn't done it before. I started in the middle too, meaning I didn't get swung as hard as the others (until we fell off and switched UFOs). There was a fantastic restaurant looking over the sea where we had dinner which was lovely. All of the food throughout the holiday had been amazing, and I'd strongly recommend moussaka, souvlaki, baklava, and greek salad.
